January 26, 2010: patinas and snow

Brrr...why does it feel COLDER after a nice warm-snap? I almost got used to that spring-like weather we had...even with those winds taking down limbs and blowing the feathers off my chickens!

Be crafty this week, it is warm at our work table:
Try-It Tuesday today at Panopolie and I'll help you make a pair of Winter Blossom Earrings. You'll learn how to use beautiful-but-tricky flower shaped beads! All day at Panopolie, for just $2 a project. See all the details here.

We re-run the Try It Tuesday on Friday mornings from 8:30-10:00 at Breakfast and Beads!
Come to Technique Thursday at Ornamentea and you can make a pair of Dreamcatcher Earrings for just $4. You'll learn some basic wire-wrapping techniques and how to get kinks out of thin-gauge wire, too! Details here.

Cold-weather classes are up at Panopolie.com and Ornamentea.com. Take off your gloves and make something!

Get out your calendar:
  • Friday Feb. 5th: We're having a reception for the new Steampunk Jewelry book contributors at Ornamentea on Friday, February the 5th. We'll have great food, good wine and many of the artists will be selling their work. This is a great chance to get your book signed and show off your own Steampunk style.
  • Friday Feb. 12th: join us as we host a reception for artist Kathy King to celebrate her new book, Bead Quilled Jewelry. This book turns beadweaving on it's head, literally. Come see samples of Kathy's work and get your book signed at Ornamentea from 6:30-8:00 pm on February 12th.
Join us for a Patina Slumber Party at Panopolie on February 26th. You'll get a goodie bag with lots of charms and metal do-dads and you can learn to create several quick-finish patinas on them in one night! This will be loads of fun; good food, great conversation and crafting!
Pre-registration is required, space is limited for this event! Call 919-872-4767 to register today.
Oh, we don't really spend the entire night at Panopolie, if you need a local place to sleep we suggest this hotel.

Put this quote on your fridge:
Don't think. Thinking is the enemy of creativity. It's self-conscious, and anything self-conscious is lousy. You can't try to do things. You simply must do things. Ray Bradbury

This week on the blog:
  • A way to donate your un-used beads to help children in need.
  • Free Steampunk Clip-Art
  • that train story I promised you last week!
The blog is at www.beadfreak.com

Join me on January 31st at the Berkeley Cafe for a benefit concert featuring some of your favorite local bluegrass musicians & delicious local food from the Q-Shack.  The all-ages show opens at 4:00 and your donation at the door goes to help local artist and Renaissance man Dickey Massey with some crushing medical debts. Dickey is the Santa-Claus look-alike you see in red suspenders sorting through our mixed bead tables, or browsing the shelves of the used book store, or making silly faces at kids in crowds. My family is looking forward to hearing Caitlin Cary & Matt Douglas, the Countdown Quartet, Kenny Roby, Scott McCall, John Howie Jr.& Billie Feather and Big Machete play some really great music and the sweet 'taters from the QShack are worth a trip, too! Go to www.berkeleycafe.net for more information about this event, I'll see you there!
