Shiny Time Earrings
These long, elegant earrings feature vintage clock hands and a bit of sparkle. The length is enhanced by the short sections of Swarovski crystal chain at the top of the earrings. The variable patina on the clock hands is wonderful mixed with the naked brass of the crystal findings and the gunmetal and stainless steel findings.
Ingredients
- 2 black clock hands, 3.5 inches
- 2 Olivine Swarovski crystal navettes, 15mm x 25 mm
- 2 stainless steel ear loops
- 6 gunmetal jump rings, 9 mm
- 1.5 inches (6 crystals total) Olivine Swarovski crystal chain
- 4 brass crimp-on chain ends, 2.5 mm
- 2 medium naked brass splat charms
- 2 small naked brass splat charms
Tools
- Chain nose pliers
- Cutters
1. Trim crystal chain into two 3-link sections. Fit the end of one section into a crimp-on chain end and flatten prongs on chain end with your chain nose pliers. Repeat with other end to create a 3-crystal chain link. Repeat with second chain section.
2. Using your chain nose pliers gently open the loop on the end of the simple ear loop. Feed through one of end of a crystal chain section. Close securely.
3. Using your chain nose pliers open a jump ring. Feed the jump ring through the clock hand, through the loop on one end of a navette, through one of the medium splat charms and through the loop on the bottom of the 3-crystal chain link. Close securely.
4. Using your chain nose pliers open a jump ring and feed it through the loop on the navette and then through the small spat charm. Close securely.
5. Repeat to create second earring.

- 8 inches of yellow leather cord, 1.5 mm
- 8 inches of red leather cord, 1.5 mm
- 8 inches of aqua leather cord, 1.5 mm
- 6 antique copper leather coil ends, 1 mm
- 1 antique copper Pegasus charm pendant
- 1 antique copper jump ring, 9 mm
- 6 antique copper jump rings, 7 mm
- 1 antique copper spring ring clasp, 12 mm
Tools

Summer Currents Necklace
This light necklace shows off Elaine Ray’s Murrini beads by scattering them among thin white leather cord strands. Several of the cord strands have no beads on them at all but they add texture and drama to the necklace.
Ingredients:
- 18 assorted Elaine Ray Porcelain Murrini Beads (small lentil, round, pipe, disc)
- 4 yards white leather cording, cut into 12 inch pieces
- 36 silver tube crimps, #4 size
- 7 inches antique silver extender chain, cut into two 3 ½ inch pieces
- 2 antique silver machine caps
- 1 pewter arrowhead toggle
- 6 inches stripe ribbon, 3/16th wide, cut into 4 1 ½ inch pieces
Tools:
- Chain nose pliers
- Scissors
- 527 glue
1. Thread a crimp bead, a porcelain bead and a crimp bead onto a piece of leather. Position the three beads approximately 2” from the end of the leather and flatten the crimp beads with your chain nose pliers. Add 2 more beads to the strand, spacing the beads out along the leather. Repeat this, placing 2 or 3 porcelain beads onto leather strands until you have used all the porcelain beads. As you work, pay attention to the strands with beads on them so that you do not repeat the patterns or placement of specific beads.
2. Gather together the leather strands and use a rubber band approximately 1” from each end to keep the strands tightly bound. Carefully even the ends out, pulling on the leather from the center of the bundle to make the bound ends even.
3. Place a drop of glue inside the machined cap and fit one bundled end of leather inside. Push leather into the cap as far as it will go. If any glue comes out of the cap edges wipe it off quickly. Repeat with the other bundled end of the leather strands. Allow glue to dry for 24 hours.
4. Using 1 ½ sections of ribbon, tie the chain sections to the machine caps. Tie the toggle pieces on the ends of the chain with the remaining ribbon sections. Trim any ribbon ends that are too long.

Filigree Butterfly Ring
This ring uses brass micro screws and nuts to quickly and permanently attach stacked elements. These tiny screws add a bit of mechanical detail to your designs. The filigree pieces are flattened and bent to shape before being screwed together. The nuts used to fasten the screws are on the back of the design and you’ll finish the ring by sanding them smooth for a comfortable fit.
Ingredients:
- 1 naked brass filigree butterfly
- 1 antique brass large dapped filigree oval, 35x42 mm
- 1 vintage watch face, approx. 25 mm (clip off any prongs on back using flush cutters)
- 1 vintage plastic flower, 14 mm
- 1 medium splat charm, 15 mm
- 2 brass micro screws and nuts, ¼ inch
Tools:
- Flush end cutters
- Flat nose pliers
- Ring mandrel
- Rawhide hammer
- Steel bench block
- Rubber bench block
- Jewelers needle file set
1. Stack the steel bench block on top of the rubber bench block. Place the large dapped filigree oval on the steel bench block. Using your rawhide hammer pound out the dapping until the filigree is flat.
2. Using your hands bend the flattened filigree around the ring mandrel at the appropriate size. Place the ring mandrel on its side and use the rawhide mallet to hammer the ring into shape. You may wish to use the rubber bench block to stabilize the ring mandrel.
3. Using your fingers bend the tips of the butterfly wings upward as shown. Make sure to leave sufficient flat area in the center of the butterfly for your watch face. Position the butterfly over the oval filigree ring and line up openings in the filigrees. Thread a micro screw through the front of the watch face and then through the butterfly and ring filigree. Using your flat nose pliers fit a micro nut on the back of the screw and turn the nut to tighten the screw. When the screw is almost completely tight stop and check the position of the butterfly as it may have shifted slightly. Use the remaining micro screw to attach the plastic flower and the brass splat charm on the front of the ring. Tighten the micro nuts on both screws as tight as you can.
4. Using your flush cutters trim off the screws so that the metal is flush with the nut. Use a needle file to completely smooth the metal for a comfortable fit. Click here for a printable version of this tutorial |
